AURORA Inaugurates Second Patient Accommodation Facility in Patras for Hematological Patients

Athens, April 4, 2024 - The philanthropic organization " AURORA - Together Against Hematological Diseases" inaugurated its second patient accommodation facility in Patras, catering to our fellow citizens who have undergone bone marrow transplantation. This initiative aligns with AURORA 's mission to provide practical and psychological support to patients with hematological conditions. The inauguration ceremony took place on Thursday, April 4, 2024, in Rio, Patras, and was attended by dignitaries including Mr. Nektarios Farmakis, Regional Governor of Western Greece; Charalambos Bonanos, Deputy Regional Governor of Achaea; Anna Albani, Vice-Rector of the University of Patras; Anna Mastorakou, Deputy Regional Governor of Public Health; Dimitris Bakos, Director of the University General Hospital of Patras; and Alexandros Spyridonidis, Director of the Hematology Department of the Internal Medicine Clinic of the University General Hospital of Patras.

With a vision to contribute to the effort to make leukemia and other hematological diseases completely curable, AURORA also aims to improve the care provided to patients in Greece and support those facing financial difficulties. Often, the cost of relocating away from home for an extended period to receive treatment at one of the transplant centers in Athens, Thessaloniki, or Patras, is a significant factor influencing patients' decisions regarding treatment.

In this context, AURORA implements a housing program, providing accommodation close to the transplantation centers for low-income patients. Following the inauguration of the first facility in Patras in 2022 and responding to increased demand, AURORA is expanding its housing program, now offering a total of 4 houses in Athens and Patras. The new apartment inaugurated in the capital of Achaia for patients of the University General Hospital of Patras is located in close proximity to the hospital and can host an additional patient along with their caregiver, providing ideal conditions and allowing them to focus on what matters most: their recovery.

Clemente Pinedo, President and founding member of the philanthropic organization AURORA, stated: "With great joy and emotion, we inaugurated the second apartment of AURORA in Patras, aiming to actively assist our fellow citizens and their families who are battling leukemia. Our goal is to ensure that patients do not have to deal with the often burdensome cost of being away from home for an extended period during this difficult time, enabling them to focus on getting well."

Nektarios Farmakis, Regional Governor of Western Greece, commented: "Today, we attended the inauguration of the new accommodation facility for hematological patients, created in Rio by the AURORA organization, thanks to the David and Pinedo families, who turned their pain into contribution. A gesture of immense value to our society, executed with humility and selfless love for our fellow human beings. We need such actions and especially such examples to emulate. Congratulations!"

AURORA offers free accommodation along with a range of services to assist patients, including free psychological support from specialized professionals, house cleaning, and food allowance. Additionally, Aurora continues its unwavering advocacy for leukemia and other hematological patients, supporting specialized medical centers in Greece and contributing to research development in the field of hematology-oncology.
